SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State football team will travel to play one of its biggest rivals, UT Permian Basin, on Saturday in Midland.
The game is scheduled for 6 p.m. at Astound Broadband Stadium.
ASU is coming off a 28-14 win at home last week over Texas A&M-Kingsville that was highlighted by former Water Valley standout Canon Wiese having a career day with 173 rushing yards and three touchdowns, along with a TD catch.
It was a big moment not only for a local product but for all of six-man football to see one of its players have a performance like that at the college level.
It earned Wiese Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
ASU is 3-5 overall and 3-3 in LSC play with three games remaining, so the Rams can’t do more than play spoiler and build toward next season at this point.
They have a chance to end UTPB’s postseason hopes as the Falcons are still potentially in the mix at 5-3 overall and 4-2 in LSC play.
The rivalry between San Angelo and Odessa teams goes back a long way, and UTPB’s ascension in recent years has helped take this series to the next level.
ASU has a 7-2 record over UTPB, but the Falcons have won two of the last three.
ASU quarterback Maddox Maher, who played his high school ball at Dripping Springs, has led the Rams to a 2-1 record since taking over the starting job.
Maher will have a big test this week, however, on the road against a UTPB defense that has allowed the fewest yards in the conference.
The Falcons only have the No. 9-ranked offense in the LSC, so this could possibly be a defensive battle.
ASU will return home next week to host Eastern New Mexico at 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7, in the Rams’ final appearance in San Angelo this year.
Their season will conclude Nov. 14 at Western New Mexico.
