SAN ANGELO, TX — For the first time in the last 20 meetings, the Lake View Chiefs have finally beaten the Andrews Mustangs. Stormy weather and rain could not hold Lake View back from a huge second half as the Chiefs beat the Mustangs 31-22 at home on Thursday night.
"I just have to give credit to the boys," head coach Hector Guevara said after the game. "They didn't let being down get to them. They fought, even though they were behind. They believed in what we were doing. They performed, and they executed."
Sr. quarterback Chris Alvizo accounted for every score tonight, throwing five touchdown passes in the rain.
Stepping up in a huge way for the Chiefs on Friday night, wide receiver Gabe Alvarez took over the game with three second-half touchdown catches and four total on the night.
Andrews clawed its way onto the board first after a long opening drive took up half the first quarter. The Mustangs' Tommy Andrews ran a sweep from 11 yards out to put Andrews up 7-0.
Lake View answered as time wound down in the 2nd quarter. The Chiefs' defense came up with a play when Isaiah Fuentes recovered a fumble. That led to a deep pass from quarterback Chris Alvizo to Alvarez in the corner of the end zone. Unfortunately, the Chiefs missed the extra point and trailed 7-6 with a minute and a half to play in the quarter.
Andrews used that final minute to extend its lead. Three deep passes in a row put the Mustangs in the end zone to stretch the lead to 14-6 at the break.
Lake View finally connected on a deep ball on the Chiefs' first drive in the 3rd quarter. Alvizo launched a deep ball to Isaiah Rivera, who gathered the football and sprinted to the house to pull within two points.
The Lake View defense stepped up and forced a punting situation, then blocked it. The blocked kick handed the ball back to the offense. It did not take Alvizo long to find Alvarez for his second touchdown, taking the lead for the first time on the evening.
Andrews answered with a touchdown and a 2-point conversion to take a 22-18 lead late in the 3rd quarter, but that would be the last time the Mustangs would score all night.
Lake View would answer the touchdown with another connection between Alvizo and Alvarez to retake the lead midway through the 4th quarter.
The Chiefs sacked Tommy Andrews to set up a 4th-and-long near the field and force a punt. Backed up inside the Chiefs' own 10-yard line, it was make-or-break time for Lake View. On 3rd and long, Alvizo avoided the blitz with a quick throw, hitting a wide-open Alvarez over the middle on a slant. A track star in his own right, Alvarez sprinted 90 yards to the house to seal the win for the Chiefs.
"I knew no one was going to catch me," Alvarez said after the game. "I run track, and I'm one of the fastest ones at the school. No one was going to catch me."
Andrews would miss a field goal before it was all said and done, but when the clock hit zero, the Chiefs were victorious.
With the 31-22 win, Lake View moves to 1-1 in district play.
Next up, the Chiefs hit the road to play their season finale in Midland against Greenwood. Kickoff in that matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6.
