Defending Champion Wall Tops Preseason Girls Basketball Rankings

WALL, TX — The preseason state rankings for girls basketball have dropped from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, and multiple teams from the Concho Valley made the list.

Leading the way in Tom Green County are the defending state champion Wall Lady Hawks, coming in at No. 1 in 3A.

In the 2A rankings, the Mason Cowgirls are ranked No. 3, with the Ozona Lady Lions at No. 24.

In 1A, the Irion County Lady Hornets are ranked No. 17.

Last season, Wall defeated Central Heights 49-34 to claim its third state title in program history. Mason made it to the state title game for the first time ever, but fell to No. 1 Panhandle, 38-25. Ozona saw its season come to an end in the regional semifinals to Wellington 67-35 after after two playoff wins. Irion County also finished its season in the regional semifinals when the Lady Hornets fell to Hermleigh 70-56.

The Lady Hawks look to reload and repeat behind last season's state final MVP, Jewels Johnson. As a sophomore, Johnson averaged 14 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 3 steals a game. Now the junior should be one of the leaders of this squad as the Lady Hawks look for a repeat championship run.

Meanwhile, the Cowgirls aim to return to the state final behind Flora Appleton.

Appleton, a 6-foot-2 senior guard, had 17 points and 11 rebounds in the TGCA 1A-4A All-Star Game in Arlington over the summer. She was one of only 24 players in the state who were chosen to compete. Her performance garnered attention from several colleges, and she has had Division I offers from San Jose State, Siena, Cal State-Bakersfield and Bellarmine. Division II schools interested include Angelo State and Arkansas Tech.

Appleton averaged 13.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game last year to earn 2A all-state honors.

Ozona will be led this season by senior point guard Avery Davidson.

Davidson helped lead the Lady Lions to a 26-9 overall record. She averaged 13.2 points, 6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3 steals to earn all-region honors.

Finally, Irion County standout sophomore PK Parker looks to build off a successful freshman campaign. She was named Offensive MVP of District 11-1A and averaged 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.5 steals to lead the Lady Hornets to a 26-6 record and a pair of playoff wins. She was also an all-region selection.
