Broncos Beat the Seahawks in OT in Defensive Clash

DENVER, CO — Ja'Quan McMillian intercepted Sam Darnold in overtime, setting up a 53-yard field goal by Wil Lutz that lifted the Denver Broncos to a 17-14 victory over the Seattle Seahawks on Thursday night.

Denver improved to 4-2 despite struggling offensively and dealing with several injuries on defense. Seattle fell to 3-3 after losing its second game in five days, matching its loss total from last season, when the Seahawks won their second Super Bowl title.

The Broncos managed just 168 yards of total offense and three first downs, compared with Seattle's 353 yards. Quarterback Bo Nix completed 17 of 27 passes for 107 yards, while J.K. Dobbins led Denver's rushing attack with 41 yards. Denver's defense helped overcome those offensive struggles, recording five sacks and hitting Darnold 17 times.

Darnold completed 27 of 51 passes for 278 yards with two interceptions and no touchdowns.

McMillian intercepted Darnold's pass intended for Rashid Shaheed at the Denver 43-yard line on Seattle's opening possession of overtime. The turnover set up Lutz's game-winning field goal.

Seattle forced overtime after rallying from an 11-point deficit in the fourth quarter. After scoring just three points on their first eight possessions, the Seahawks put together an 11-play, 67-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard touchdown run by George Holani. Darnold connected with Shaheed on the 2-point conversion to cut Denver's lead to 14-11 with 5:41 remaining.

Denver appeared to have secured the victory when Kris Abrams-Draine intercepted Darnold at the Broncos' 30-yard line with 1:25 remaining in regulation. However, Denver ran just 15 seconds off the clock before punting.

Shaheed returned the punt 31 yards to midfield, giving Seattle another opportunity to tie the game. Jason Myers connected on a 34-yard field goal with three seconds remaining to tie the score at 14 and force overtime. The kick capped an 11-0 Seattle scoring run over the final 5 1/2 minutes of regulation.

Denver built its early lead behind two rushing touchdowns in the second quarter.

Dobbins scored on a 4-yard run before R.J. Harvey took a direct snap and scored from 1 yard out, giving the Broncos a 14-3 halftime advantage.

Seattle's most promising drive of the first half ended at the Denver 34 when linebacker Nik Bonitto forced a fumble by Shaheed. Inside linebacker Justin Strnad recovered the ball.

Denver coach Sean Payton credited his defense for carrying the team through another difficult offensive performance. The victory improved Denver's all-time overtime record to 33-23-2, the second-best mark in the NFL. Seattle fell to 19-30-1 in overtime games.

The Seahawks will return home to face the Kansas City Chiefs on Oct. 25, while the Broncos will host the Arizona Cardinals the same day.
