SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State football team couldn’t be carrying much more momentum as it hits the road Saturday to play Midwestern State in Wichita Falls.
The Rams are coming off a 64-0 win last week over Sul Ross State that was their most points scored since 1993.
Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. at Memorial Stadium.
After an 0-3 start to the season, ASU has won two of its last three games, beginning with a 29-28 upset of No. 17-ranked Western Oregon. The Rams followed that with a 41-14 setback against No. 12 Central Washington before last week’s huge win over Sul Ross State for homecoming.
Now with a 2-4 overall record and a 2-2 mark in Lone Star Conference play, ASU will try to put together a strong finish to the season with five games remaining.
Midwestern State is 4-2 overall and 3-1 in LSC play. The Mustangs hold the series lead with ASU, 15-12, but the Rams have won the last four matchups and five of the last six dating back to the 2019 season.
Last week’s game saw the first college start by quarterback Maddox Maher. The redshirt freshman from Dripping Springs threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns in the first half before Ayden Arp, who had started the previous five games, played the second half.
The Rams’ defense also had three returns for touchdowns to help turn the game into a complete rout.
ASU, which has the No. 1-ranked defense in the LSC, will now face a MSU team with the No. 4 offense in the country. The Mustangs are led by QB Kaden Brown, who has thrown for 2,121 yards and 16 TDs with seven interceptions.
The Rams will return to San Angelo next week for their second-to-last home game of the season at 6 p.m. Oct. 24 against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
