Ballinger's Gayoso, Menard's Holland Named Texas Coaches of the Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — Two Concho Valley coaches, Ballinger's Bryan Gayoso and Menard's Clay Holland, were each honored Tuesday as the Dave Campbell's Texas Football Coach of the Week.

Gayoso won the award for Class 2A, while Holland won in Class 1A. Each coach led their school to a win last week over an undefeated team.

Gayoso's Ballinger Bearcats rallied from a nine-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat Forsan 40-37.

Ballinger improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in District 4-2A Division I, making the Bearcats the surprise co-leader in district with Sonora.

Gayoso, a 1990 graduate of San Angelo Lake View High School, is in his second season as Ballinger's head coach but has been a longtime assistant at the school.

Menard went on the road and defeated No. 5-ranked Water Valley 65-37 to move into the driver's seat for the title in District 8-1A Division I.

The Yellow Jackets are now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in district. They've won 17 of their last 18 games dating back to last year.

Holland, a 2004 graduate of Junction High School, is in his third season as the head coach at Menard. The team is 26-2-1 since he took over the program.

Other Coach of the Week winners were Orangefield's Greg Neece in 3A, Gilmer's Alan Metzel in 4A, Canutillo's Scott Brooks in 5A, Round Rock Cedar Ridge's Bryan Vardeman in 6A and Victoria St. Joseph's Jacob Vasquez for private schools.
