SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best football games, biggest wins and top performers from last week in the Concho Valley and West Texas:
Best game: Sonora-Christoval
After falling behind 20-0, the Sonora Broncos rallied for an exciting 40-32 win at Christoval. Sonora trailed most of the night but tied the game at 26-26 early in the fourth quarter. After Christoval regained the lead, Sonora answered again on a touchdown pass from Aaron Segura to Wyatt Killough with just over two minutes remaining. Evan Arredondo then scored the winning TD with less than a minute remaining when he took the ball from a teammate who was being tackled and raced into the end zone. It was a huge win for a Sonora team that improved to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in district. It was also a tough loss for Christoval, which fell to 1-4 overall and 0-1 in district.
Biggest win: Eldorado
On the verge of carrying a four-game losing streak into the start of District 4-2A Division II play, the Eldorado Eagles pulled off a 12-point comeback to defeat TLCA San Angelo 28-24. Eldorado never led until Garrett Walling found Chuy Martinez for a 24-yard touchdown pass in the final minutes. Eldorado trailed 24-12 at halftime but posted a second-half shutout. Eldorado and TLCA will both take 2-4 records into their district openers this week.
Biggest surprise: Wall
As the saying goes, you can’t win ‘em all, but it was still eye-opening to see the Wall Hawks’ winning streak finally come to an end after 21 straight victories in a 34-26 loss at Midland Christian. Wall led 9-0 early but fell behind in the second quarter and never recovered. Quarterback Gunner King was also injured in the second half, which obviously made the comeback more difficult. Midland Christian is a 10-time state champion in the private school ranks, so this was a worthy opponent. This may not be the worst thing for Wall either before it heads to Llano this week to begin District 3-3A Division I play. It’s also worth taking a moment to appreciate what an accomplishment it is to win 21 games in a row. Wall hadn’t lost since the state semifinals in 2024, a run that included its first state title last year and an impressive 5-0 start to this season with a largely new team.
Most impressive win: Forsan
The Forsan Buffaloes improved their record to 6-0 with a dominant 58-16 win over Reagan County. While Forsan was expected to win, they left no doubt with a 42-point victory, which was their fifth straight win by 24 points or more. This team won a combined six games the previous two years, and they’ve already matched that by the first week of October. They look like the clear favorite now in District 4-2A Division I, though they still have big games ahead, beginning this week at 4-1 Ballinger.
Case for the defense: Goldthwaite
The Goldthwaite Eagles are just a bit outside our coverage area, but we’ll give them some acknowledgement after posting their third shutout of the season last week in a 61-0 win over Miles. Goldthwaite, ranked No. 7 in the state in Class 2A Division II, is allowing only 9.5 points per game through six weeks. They’ll face their biggest test Oct. 16 when they travel to play No. 10 Albany.
Strong in defeat: San Angelo Lake View
The Lake View Chiefs lost an overtime heartbreaker for the second consecutive week with a 35-34 defeat against Levelland, but it was remarkable Lake View was in that position at all. The Chiefs were without their top two receivers, Chris Rodela and Andrew Young, and they still managed to lead most of the game. Aiden Rivera had a breakout game with nine carries for 74 yards, plus five catches for 131 yards and two TDs. Lake View could easily be 5-1 right now, but the Chiefs will have to move forward with a 3-3 record when they host Pflugerville Connally this week.
