Lake View Chiefs Lose in Overtime for Second Straight Week

SAN ANGELO, TX — The heartbreak continued for the Lake View Chiefs on Friday night with an overtime loss for the second consecutive week.

After losing 27-20 to Big Spring last week, Lake View dropped a 35-34 decision to Levelland this week in a game it never trailed until the final extra point sailed through the uprights.

Lake View led 21-7 and 28-14, but the Chiefs weren’t able to put Levelland away. They caught a break when the Lobos missed a 26-yard field goal on the last play of regulation to send the game to overtime.

Lake View had the ball first in OT and scored on a 2-yard run by Chris Alvizo, but head coach Hector Guevara elected to go for a two-point conversion, and the pass fell incomplete.

When Levelland responded with a 10-yard TD run by Noah Martin, kicker Matthew Guillen had a chance at redemption after his missed field goal, and his extra point won the game.

Lake View fell to 3-3 when the Chiefs could very easily be 5-1. They’ll try to bounce back next week when they host Pflugerville Connally at San Angelo Stadium in their nondistrict finale.

Levelland improved to 4-2 and will be off next week before hosting Perryton.

Lake View actually had an impressive performance when you consider that the Chiefs were without their top two wide receivers, Andrew Young and Chris Rodela, who were both out with injuries.

Aiden Rivera stepped up with his best game of the season, which included two TD catches. He  had a number of other big plays, including a 51-yard catch to set up another touchdown. He also had a 39-yard run and a 28-yard catch.

With other top playmakers out, Rivera delivered over and over again.

Alvizo threw three TD passes, including one to Calvin Whitfield, and he had two TD runs.

Leading 21-14 at halftime, Lake View scored on its opening drive of the second half to take a 14-point lead, but the Chiefs failed to score on their remaining three drives in regulation.

Lake View had a chance to take a 31-21 lead with about nine minutes remaining, but a 29-yard field goal try missed, and Levelland then drove down the field to tie the game.

Levelland scored its first TD of the night on a crazy play when its punter, Martin, evaded heavy pressure and raced 49 yards for a score on a fourth-and-24.

Lake View shook that off, however, and regained the lead on a 10-yard catch by Rivera. Isaiah Fuentes then had an interception to set up Whitfield's 16-yard TD grab for a 21-7 lead with 1:56 left in the half.

But Levelland answered with just six seconds left before halftime on a 1-yard TD run by Ethan Salazar, allowing the Lobos to stay within striking distance.
