High-Octane Sonora Faces Christoval in District Matchup

CHRISTOVAL, TX — The Sonora Broncos are looking to get their second district win when they travel to take on the Christoval Cougars tonight.

Sonora (4-1 overall, 1-0 in District 4-2A Division I) had an incredible outing against Colorado City last week when senior quarterback Aaron Segura threw for 634 yards and seven touchdowns on 38-of-49 passing with two interceptions in a 54-19 win. The performance earned him two statewide honors — Panini's 2A Quarterback of the Week and the Built Ford Tough 2A Player of the Week.

Segura and his Bronco brothers now turn their attention to Christoval (1-3 overall, 0-0 in district), which is coming off a bye week.

This matchup features Sonora's high-powered passing attack against a Cougar secondary that has eight interceptions in only four games. The Christoval defense could get some chances at some turnovers as Segura has thrown 10 interceptions. Segura will depend on Jayden Welborn (32 catches, 609 yards, 9 TDs), Wyatt Killough (31-582, 5 TDs) and Angel Diaz (15-282, 2 TDs) to outmatch Christoval’s Kash Bates (3 INTs), Jett Whitlow (3 INTs) and Kreed Kirkland (2 INTs). If Sonora's top three receivers are locked down, the Broncos still have Alex Portillo and Armani Coronado to look to for plays.

The Broncos will have to watch out for Christoval running back Danny Alfaro, who has 494 rushing yards and seven TDs, and quarterback Ty DeBusk, who has rushed for 342 yards and one TD.

Like the Broncos' running game, which has been limited to 121 yards per game, the Cougars' passing game leaves a little to be desired as they’ve only thrown it 49 times this season. With a backfield with DeBusk and Alfaro, Christoval is averaging 301 rushing yards a game, meaning they can control the clock. When they do decide to pass, they’ll need to watch for Sonora’s Beau Blackbird, who has six sacks.

Sonora plays Christoval at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, at Jack Pardee Stadium in Christoval.
