WASHINGTON — CBS Sports and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways after nine years, CBS Sports said Friday.
Romo, CBS Sports’ former lead NFL analyst, was arrested July 23 on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence and was placed on leave from the network shortly afterward.
“CBS Sports and Tony Romo have mutually agreed to part ways,” the network said in a statement. “We thank Tony for his contributions over the past nine years and wish him the best moving forward.”
Former Houston Texans defensive lineman J.J. Watt will continue to work with play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS Sports’ lead NFL team for the rest of the season, the network said.
Romo has not publicly commented on his departure from CBS Sports. In September, before the NFL season began, he acknowledged responsibility for the incident in a statement posted on Instagram.
“I own this completely,” Romo said.
According to Milwaukee County court records, Romo lost his driving privileges for six months and was ordered to complete an alcohol assessment program. He also owes $834 and must have an ignition interlock device installed on any vehicle he owns, operates or has registered in his name. The order will remain in effect for at least one year after he is issued a license.
“Multiple back surgeries ended my career earlier than I expected and left me with constant, debilitating pain,” Romo said in his September statement. “That pain led to a dependence on pain medication, and my efforts to get off those medications led to an over-reliance on alcohol.”
