SAN ANGELO, TX — After stunning No. 17-ranked Western Oregon last week, the Angelo State football team hopes to pull off another upset at home Saturday over No. 12 Central Washington.
The Rams will host the Wildcats at 6 p.m. at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field.
ASU earned its first win of the season last week when it went on the road and defeated Western Oregon 29-28 in overtime.
Sophomore quarterback Ayden Arp threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns. He then found Trevor Winn for the game-winning two-point conversion in OT.
ASU improved to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in Lone Star Conference play.
Central Washington enters this game with a 2-2 overall record and 2-0 mark in LSC play. The losses were to FCS school Cal Poly (24-17) and No. 1-ranked Division II school Ferris State (28-14), while the wins were against Western Oregon (45-36) and Sul Ross State (61-22).
Central Washington beat ASU 38-21 last year when they met in Ellensburg, Washington.
Despite the Rams’ 0-3 start to the year, Saturday’s contest represents a chance to post back-to-back wins over nationally ranked teams and stay in the mix in the LSC race.
It could truly be a season-saving win for ASU.
Central Washington has the No. 14-ranked offense in Division II with 453.8 yards per game, and it’s a balanced attack with 239 yards through the air and 214.8 on the ground.
ASU, meanwhile, has only the No. 90 offense with 351.5 yards per game.
However, Central Washington’s defense is allowing 395.5 yards per game, which is No. 108 in the country. ASU’s defense is No. 72, giving up an average of 356.5 yards.
