SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are our top five football games to watch this week in the Concho Valley and West Texas:
Wall (5-0) at Midland Christian (2-3)
Not many schools can say they’ve played Wall even over the years, but Midland Christian is one of them. The Mustangs have split six meetings with the Hawks, including a 41-6 win in their last matchup in 2020. So this is a game that should have Wall’s attention.
Midland Christian is a private school that has won 10 state championships, most recently in 2011. The Mustangs’ record is only 2-3 this year, but they always play quality competition. They opened the year with a 66-63 win over an Argyle Liberty Christian team that is the No. 6-ranked private school in the state. Midland Christian then lost three straight against Wayne Hills (41-34), Jarrell (36-31) and Brock (52-10) before topping Jim Ned (50-27). Wall also beat Jim Ned, 49-13.
This is Wall’s final nondistrict game before the Hawks travel to Llano next week to kick off District 3-3A Division I play. Wall has passed every test so far with five wins — giving the Hawks 21 in a row overall — to move up to No. 2 in the state. After a 42-35 comeback win to start the season over a state-ranked 4A D-I Canyon West Plains team, Wall has rolled to one big win after another, capped by last week’s 31-13 victory over 4A D-I Midland Greenwood.
This is exactly the type of game Wall needs before next week’s clash with Llano, but we don’t expect the Hawks’ winning streak to end.
The pick: Wall 42, Midland Christian 28
San Angelo Lake View (3-2) at Levelland (3-2)
This is a rematch of a memorable game last year when Levelland ended Lake View’s 4-0 start to the season with a 40-33 win in San Angelo. The Chiefs fell behind 33-13 late in the third quarter before fighting back to give itself a chance on a heave into the end zone that fell incomplete on the final play of the game.
This year’s game will be in Levelland, where the Chiefs will try to end a four-game losing streak to the Lobos. It’s the fifth straight year these teams have played after they briefly shared a district in the early 2000s and 1960s. Both teams enter this game with a 3-2 record and a common opponent in Fort Stockton. Lake View beat Fort Stockton 41-19, while Levelland won 37-6.
Levelland is averaging 37 points per game and has a strong 1-2 punch in the backfield with Noah Martin (60 carries, 458 yards, 5 TDs) and Jake Potter (55-486, 2 TDs). The Lobos only average 18 passes per game, and they’ve completed just 42% of those. Lake View’s offense, which is scoring 34 points per game, is built the opposite as the Chiefs do most of their damage through the air. Chris Alvizo has thrown for 1,171 yards while completing 60% of his passes. Five receivers have 130 or more yards.
Lake View is coming off a 27-20 overtime loss to Big Spring, and the Chiefs would love to shake off that missed opportunity. They’ll have a chance, but it won’t be easy.
The pick: Levelland 38, Lake View 35
Eldorado (1-4) at TLCA San Angelo (2-3)
The TLCA Eagles will look to get back on track when they host Eldorado at Lake View Stadium. TLCA has lost some momentum after back-to-back wins had the team off to a 2-1 start. Since then, the Eagles have been overwhelmed in losses to Sonora (50-14) and Merkel (54-0).
Eldorado is also in need of a win after a 1-4 start to the season. They’ve lost three straight, including a 52-20 setback last week against Coleman. However, they fared better than TLCA against a common opponent in Sonora, losing that matchup 40-20.
Both of these teams have offenses with capable playmakers. TLCA quarterback Jonah Munoz threw for 274 yards and four TDs in a 42-0 win over Winters, and he has a dangerous wide receiver in Justin Reynolds, along with a bruising running back in Jackson Chacon. Eldorado QB Garrett Walling has thrown for 1,097 yards and 14 TDs, and he has a trio of wideouts with 210 or more yards, led by Chuy Martinez (21 catches, 415 yards, 4 TDs).
This should be a competitive game, and it’s the only one in San Angelo this weekend with Central off and Lake View on the road.
The pick: Eldorado 27, TLCA San Angelo 26
Sonora (4-1) at Christoval (1-3)
Sonora will head into its matchup at Christoval with a freight train’s worth of momentum after a 54-19 win over Colorado City last week. Quarterback Aaron Segura set a school record by throwing for 634 yards and seven TDs on 38-of-49 passing. Three wide receivers topped the 100-yard mark — Angelo Diaz (8 catches, 191 yards, TD), Wyatt Killough (9 catches, 181 yards, TD) and Jayden Welborn (10 catches, 115 yards, 2 TDs).
Can Christoval slow down the Broncos’ explosive passing attack? The Cougars are coming off a bye, so they’ve had a week to rest and prepare. Their season started with a 35-14 win over Eldorado, but they’ve lost three straight to Miles (27-15), Christoval (46-20) and Littlefield (62-21). Christoval’s best defense against Sonora’s passing game may be a rushing attack that has already produced over 1,200 yards in four games, led by Danny Alfaro (46 carries, 494 yards, 7 TDs) and Ty DeBusk (61-342, TD), but the passing game hasn’t been able to take flight with only 244 yards on 16 completions.
Sonora is looking like a district-title contender, and the Broncos can improve to 2-0 in District 4-2A Division I with a win here.
The pick: Sonora 31, Christoval 21
Ozona (1-4) at Colorado City (3-2)
This wasn’t supposed to be a game to watch. Ozona is the defending champion in District 4-2A D-I, while Colorado City was the district’s last-place team in 2025. Ozona ran away with a 58-18 win over Colorado City last season.
Yet the Lions look like they’re in serious trouble after four straight losses, including a 46-22 defeat against Forsan last week that may have dashed their hopes of repeating as district champs. Sure, Ozona lost 3,600-yard running back Christian Villarreal, but the Lions still seemed to have the offensive line and enough weapons in place to be a factor again. Jay Borrego has rushed for 633 yards and four TDs, and the Lions have 1,148 rushing yards overall. Ozona has faced a difficult schedule, so perhaps the Lions can get up off the mat.
Colorado City has already won its most games since 2018. The Wolves have wins over Roscoe (29-22 OT), Winters (38-0) and Grape Creek (35-0) and losses to Merkel (53-27) and Sonora (54-19). Last week’s loss to Sonora was eye-opening as the Wolves allowed 634 passing yards. Passing isn’t Ozona’s strength as the Lions have thrown for only 785 yards, but this could be a good opportunity for their offense to find its footing again.
The pick: Ozona 42, Colorado City 24
