Angelo State Soccer Downs Sul Ross State to Give Coach Erwin First LSC Win

SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State earned its first Lone Star Conference victory under head coach Mike Erwin with a 3-1 win over Sul Ross State on Wednesday afternoon at the LeGrand Soccer Complex.

The Rambelles improved to 2-6-3 overall and 1-4-2 in LSC play.

ASU took the lead in the ninth minute when a kick from Carley Martinez on the left wing deflected off a Sul Ross State defender and into the net, giving the Rambelles a 1-0 advantage.

The Rambelles added to their lead following a buildup by Graham Peeples along the right wing. Peeples delivered a low cross that Sienna Schutte redirected with her right foot into the net, sending ASU into halftime with a 2-0 lead.

ASU extended its advantage in the 56th minute after Ava Cantu was fouled inside the penalty area. Cantu took the ensuing penalty kick and sent the ball past the diving goalkeeper to give the Rambelles a 3-0 lead.

Sul Ross State broke up the shutout in the 74th minute when Averi Culver scored off a corner kick for the Lobos' lone goal of the match.

Latae Rodriguez made her first start for ASU in goal, allowing one goal while making four saves.

The Rambelles finished with 20 shots, including 11 on goal. Sul Ross State recorded 17 shots, with five on target.

ASU will look to carry the momentum into its next match when the Rambelles travel to Canyon to face West Texas A&M on Saturday, Oct. 3.
