Friday Night Rewind: Top Football Highlights From Week 5 in West Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best football games, biggest wins and top performers from last week in the Concho Valley and West Texas:

Best game: Lake View-Big Spring

Even though Lake View ended up on the wrong side of a 27-20 overtime game with Big Spring, this was an entertaining contest until the last play. It started slow as there weren’t any points until the final minutes of the first half, but it was on from there. Lake View scored on the last play of the second quarter to pull within 7-6 at halftime and set up an exciting second half. The Chiefs took their first lead with 4:51 remaining on Isaiah Rivera’s 10-yard interception return, but Big Spring came right back with a score to send the game to overtime. After Big Spring scored on the first possession of OT, Lake View looked as if it was about to tie the score when a fumble right at the goal line ended the game.

Biggest win: Ballinger

The Ballinger Bearcats went on the road and came home with a 41-22 win over Reagan County to kick off District 4-2A Division I play. It was Ballinger’s fourth road game in the first five weeks of the season, and the Bearcats have emerged from that stretch with an impressive 4-1 record. Most importantly, they’re off to a 1-0 start in district play after a win over one of their biggest competitors for a playoff spot. Ballinger now has a week off before hosting undefeated Forsan on Oct. 9 in another huge district clash.

Biggest surprise: Forsan

Speaking of Forsan, the Buffaloes went on the road and immediately shook up the district race with a 46-22 win over defending district champion Ozona. Forsan won a combined six games the last two seasons, but the Buffaloes are now a perfect 5-0 to begin this year. They were picked to finish third in this district by Texas Football, yet they are now very real contenders for the title. 

Most impressive performance: Zey Johnson, Aaron Segura, Branson Lacy, Mason Punchers

Where do we even begin with last week’s most impressive performance? We’ll just list these four remarkable accomplishments:

• San Angelo Central’s Zey Johnson set a new single-game rushing record for the Bobcats with 351 yards against Belton
• Sonora’s Aaron Segura threw for 634 yards to set a new single-game passing record for the Broncos against Colorado City
• Mason piled up 618 rushing yards as a team to break the program’s single-game record against Ingram Moore
• Water Valley’s Branson Lacy had 654 yards of offense — 404 rushing and 250 passing — along with 15 touchdowns (plus 18 tackles) in a 102-100 win over Westbrook

What a week!

Case for the defense: Menard

The Menard Yellow Jackets have allowed only four touchdowns this season and posted their third shutout with a 78-0 win over Paint Rock. Menard had three defensive TDs by Hunter Squiers, Wesley Compton and Marlee Salas to help back up their status as the No. 5-ranked team in the state in 1A D-I by sixmanfootball.com. 

Strong in defeat: Westbrook

We’ll venture a bit out of our coverage area to recognize Westbrook, which came up short in a 102-100 loss to Water Valley. Westbrook was one point away from losing by the 45-point mercy rule early in the third quarter when it stormed back from an 82-38 deficit to nearly force overtime. A late two-point kick failed, allowing Water Valley to hang on for the win, but Westbrook fought until the end in a performance that demands respect.

Zey Johnson, San Angelo Central: Had 31 carries for a school-record 354 yards and four TDs, and two catches for 18 yards and a TD in a win over Belton

Juju Lacy, San Angelo Lake View: Had two interceptions in a loss to Big Spring

Isaiah Rivera, San Angelo Lake View: Returned an interception for a touchdown in a loss to Big Spring

Chris Alvizo, San Angelo Lake View: Threw for 210 yards and two TDs on 23-of-41 passing, and had eight carries for 35 yards in a loss to Big Spring

Andrew Young, San Angelo Lake View: Had six catches for 76 yards and a TD in a loss to Big Spring
