SAN ANGELO, TX — Lake View High School senior Brianna Guerra will wear what may be the largest homecoming mum the Chiefs have ever seen Friday night when Lake View hosts the Pecos Eagles at 7 p.m. at San Angelo Stadium.
Homecoming mums are a West Texas tradition, and Friday is Lake View’s homecoming.
Guerra hired Erika at Mum’s the Word, 227 N. Main St., to build the mum from a design she sketched herself.
“I sort of freestyled the design,” Guerra said.
The mum incorporates a heart and an outline of the state of Texas, two of her favorite symbols. The colors are the same ones she plans to use for her graduation party in May 2027.
“It’s also a tribute to my grandma,” Guerra said. Her grandmother died earlier this year. “This is more than just a mum for me.”
Guerra and her mother, Melissa Villarreal, have been making unique mums together since Guerra was a sophomore. Two years ago they bought supplies from Erika. Last year, as the size and design grew more complex, Erika took over construction.
Guerra, who graduates in May 2027, said she wants to be a businesswoman. She is considering Angelo State University first.
“I want to go into business management in the hotel industry,” she said. Her mother nodded during the interview, especially when Brianna mentioned getting a college degree.
The mum cost $1,500 to create. Guerra will have it with her at Friday’s homecoming game if anyone wants to see it in person.
Look for the huge mum.
