TLCA San Angelo Wins Again With Shutout Over Winters

WINTERS, TX — After ending a 23-game losing streak last week, TLCA San Angelo backed it up with another victory Thursday to start a winning streak.

Led by 274 passing yards and four touchdowns from quarterback Jonah Munoz, the Eagles went on the road and posted an impressive 42-0 shutout against Winters.

A team that didn’t win a game in 2024 and 2025 is now off to a 2-1 start this season, and the excitement of the turnaround could be felt on the field and in the stands. 

"It feels awesome," Munoz said. "We’ve been fighting for a win ever since i started playing. Now that we've finally got it, it’s amazing. We're just looking for more now."

TLCA raced out to a 36-0 halftime lead, scoring on all but one of its first-half drives.

The Eagles rolled past TLCA Abilene 67-20 last week, and that spark seems to have lit a fire.

"We knew these guys could do it," TLCA head coach Robert Ontiveroz said. "We challenged them earlier in the week. What are you gonna do with this win? The streak is broke. Are you satisfied, or are you gonna keep this thing going?"

Ontiveroz inherited a struggling program when he arrived in San Angelo earlier this year. He was optimistic there was some talent waiting to come out if the team could come together.

"Heading into the year with a brand new coaching staff, we really needed the kids to trust us, and they've proven they have day after day," Ontiveroz said. "We told them, 'The sooner you guys trust us and buy what we're trying to sell, the faster we get this thing turned around.' And they've really done that, and we couldn't be prouder of them."

Munoz was one of seven returning starters on both sides of the ball, and he was an effective leader of the offense Thursday. He did all of his damage on just 19 passing attempts, completing 15 of them. He also added five carries for 46 yards.

Justin Reynolds had four catches for 101 yards and two TDs, while Joseph Luna had five catches for 59 yards and two scores. Etienne Trevino added five catches for 95 yards.

Jackson Chacon led the rushing attack with 13 carries for 64 yards and two TDs.

"Everyone's stepped up," Ontiveroz said. "They're not only playing with good effort, but they've been students of the game and learned the game."

TLCA will try to keep the momentum rolling next week when it visits Sonora. The Eagles will then travel to Merkel and host Eldorado before beginning play in the difficult District 3-3A Division I, which includes state-ranked Wall and Llano, along with Ingram Moore and Early.

Winters fell to 0-3 as the Blizzards are trying to get their program turned around as well. They haven't had more than two wins in a season since 2020, and depth is a significant issue this season.

Quarterback Julian Perez and wide receiver Nolan Martinez each showed flashes of big-play ability Thursday, but the Blizzards twice were stonewalled after reaching TLCA's 10-yard line.

Winters will play again next week when it hosts TLCA Abilene.
