Friday Night Rewind: Best Football Games and Performances From Week 2

SAN ANGELO, TX — Here are the best games, biggest wins and top performances from Week 2 of the high school football season in West Texas and the Concho Valley:

Best game: Water Valley-Rankin

It’s hard to top a game like this. The Water Valley Wildcats took down the No. 1-ranked team in the state in a 93-90 classic, while also getting revenge against Rankin for last year’s loss in the state semifinals. Branson Lacy also showed why he’s one of the best players in West Texas — and maybe the top six-man player in the state — with his 672-yard, 12-touchdown performance that included 412 rushing yards, 260 passing yards and 22 tackles.

Biggest win: TLCA San Angelo

We had some big wins last week, but perhaps none felt better than TLCA San Angelo snapping a 23-game losing streak. The Eagles have had a rough couple of seasons since they made the playoffs in 2023, but their emphatic 67-20 victory over TLCA Abilene finally got them back in the win column. After an encouraging 39-25 loss to Tahoka in Week 1, new head coach Robert Ontiveroz clearly has this program headed in the right direction.

Most impressive win: San Angelo Lake View, Mason

Lake View and Mason each earned this honor in different ways. Lake View was a big favorite against Snyder, but the Chiefs’ 62-0 win showcased just how talented this team is. It was the biggest margin of victory in program history and Lake View’s first shutout since 2021. Quarterback Chris Alvizo threw for 427 yards and six TDs while running for another score, and sophomore Andrew Young had a breakout game with three TD catches and two TD passes in his first appearance at QB. 

As for Mason, the No. 4-ranked Punchers went on the road and earned a 46-44 win over defending state champion Hamilton. We knew Mason looked like a state-title contender heading into the season, and they were extremely impressive with their 58-0 win over Reagan County, but a win like this truly solidifies their status.

Biggest surprise: Wall

The Hawks earned what is believed to be the first win ever by a 3A program over a 6A school. It’s not stunning that Wall beat La Joya, but the manner in which they did so raised eyebrows. The Hawks raced out to a 42-point halftime lead on the way to a 55-14 blowout. La Joya has six times as many students as Wall, but that advantage never showed up against a Hawks team loaded with speed and athleticism that has now won 18 games in a row.

Case for the defense: Miles, Menard

The Miles Bulldogs have held back-to-back opponents to 15 points or less after last week’s 32-15 win over Christoval. That was on the heels of a 14-6 loss to Sonora. Kane Brock and Cutter Travis combined for 21 tackles, five tackles for loss, four sacks and two pass breakups.

The Menard Yellow Jackets haven’t allowed a point yet with shutouts over Bronte (60-0) and Rochelle (64-0). It’s early, but they’re living up to all the preseason hype they received.

Strong in defeat: San Angelo Central

The Central Bobcats lost 47-28 on the road to Mansfield Lake Ridge, but it was a respectable showing against a Metroplex team. Central overcame a 21-7 deficit to tie the game at 21-21 in the third quarter before Lake Ridge QB DeShawn Edwards — who had nearly 3,800 yards of offense last year — took over the game late. Seeing this level of competition should help prepare Central when District 2-6A play begins.

Aiden Rivera, San Angelo Lake View: Had six catches for 74 yards and a TD in a win over Snyder

Conner Williams, San Angelo Lake View: Had 13 tackles, five tackles for loss and recovered a muffed punt in a win over Snyder

Micah Smith, San Angelo Central: Threw two TD passes and ran for a TD in a loss to Mansfield Lake Ridge

Gunner King, Wall: Threw for 225 yards and five TDs on 16-of-21 passing in a win over La Joya

Gunner Garza, Wall: Had 10 carries for 122 yards and a TD in a win over La Joya

Evan Boehle, Wall: Had six catches for 88 yards and two TDs in a win over La Joya

Kaden McFarden, Wall: Had 13 tackles, a tackle for loss, two QB hurries, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery in a win over La Joya

Branson Lacy, Water Valley: Had 23 carries for 412 yards and nine TDs, threw for 260 yards and three TDs on 9-of-13 passing, and recorded 22 tackles in a win over Rankin

Hudson Weise, Water Valley: Had 16 tackles in a win over Rankin

Lance Doss, Water Valley: Had six carries for 62 yards and a TD, and recorded 13 tackles in a win over Rankin
