Angelo State Rams Fall Just Short Against No. 11 Western Colorado

GUNNISON, CO — The Angelo State football team was unable to complete a late comeback and fell 23-21 on the road Thursday to No. 11-ranked Western Colorado.

After falling behind 23-14 early in the fourth quarter, the Rams scored on a 3-yard touchdown run by Cameron Dischler with 6:14 remaining to give themselves a chance. 

ASU’s defense then made a stop, but Western Colorado uncorked a 57-yard punt that pinned the Rams at their 1-yard line with 3:17 to play.

Quarterback Ayden Arp still managed to lead the offense across midfield to the Mountaineers’ 44-yard line before the drive finally fizzled out.

It was still an encouraging showing for an ASU team coming off a 35-14 loss at home to Fort Hays State last week. 

Arp was 19-of-27 passing for 229 yards and two TDs and no interceptions. His top target was Alan Dobbins, who had eight catches for 94 yards and a TD.

The Rams’ rushing attack was limited to only 59 yards.

Overall, it was a fairly even game as Western Colorado had 324 yards compared to 288 for ASU.

Dobbins’ 25-yard TD catch with 10:47 left in the second quarter staked the Rams to an early 14-3 lead, but Western Colorado scored the next 20 points to take control of the game. 

ASU won’t play again until 6 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, when it hosts West Texas A&M.
