SONORA, TX — The Sonora Broncos are getting ready for a dogfight in a super competitive district with an experienced team.
Last year, the Broncos were 7-2 but closed out the season with back-to-back losses against Colorado City in district play and in the bi-district playoff round against Stamford. Quarterback Aaron Segura went down with an injury against the Wolves, so when the playoffs came around, the Broncos were without their starting QB.
This season, Segura is back and entering his third year as the starter. Sonora head coach Blake Weston said Segura, along with the rest of the team, is picking up where they left off.
“Segura looks amazing,” Weston said. “We had our Midnight Madness on Monday, and it was probably the best I’ve seen him throw the ball ever. We’re able to get deep in the playbook and, him being a three-year starter, has a lot of experience under his belt. He’s super smart and knows what we want. He looks really good.”
Last year, Segura was 107-of-204 passing for 1,766 yards, 18 touchdowns and five interceptions.
A quarterback’s best friend is his offensive line, which Weston is happy about this season.
Weston said, “We brought back four from last year and, I say four, but one of the guys that didn’t play last year due to some circumstance was going to start at right tackle for us, is back. He probably would have been our best last season, so we really bring back all five.”
It wouldn’t be a Blake Weston Sonora team without a guy who flies under the radar but explodes on the scene. That guy this year is junior Armani Coronado, who stepped in last season for the injured Segura and played both running back and linebacker. He was more of a defensive player for the Broncos, leading the team with 111 tackles and snagging three INTs as a sophomore.
“He (Coronado), played 11 games for us last year, and he can fly,” said Weston.
Another weapon for Segura is senior 6-foot-5 tight end Evan Arredondo, who was second in receiving yards with 471 and third in receiving touchdowns with four. He was dealing with an injury but now, he is “full-go."
“We really have 11 dudes who have played football on the offensive side,” Weston said.
The Broncos are ready to take the next step and bring back plenty of other weapons for the quarterback. Leading receiver Jayden Wellborn, along with Wyatt Killough and Alex Portillo, will man the receiver positions with Angel Diaz and Eliseo Garza as pure athletes on the football field.
“It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Weston said, “We have a lot of different players to get the ball to.”
Many of the same faces on offense will play defense, but with the depth and experience, the Bronco defense will be ready.
Overall, Sonora returns nine starters on offense and seven on defense.
Sonora’s district will be one of the more competitive districts in the Concho Valley, and playoff spots look up for grabs. Defending champion Ozona will have to not only replace running back Christian Villarreal but quarterback Michael Preddy. Forsan, which has had a couple of down seasons, is always a threat, and Christoval is on the upswing. Add in Reagan County bringing back 17 total starters on both sides of the football, and Ballinger realigning into this district, and it could be a wide-open race for the four playoff spots. Even Colorado City, which is picked to finish last, returns 17 starters.
Sonora starts its season at Miles at 7 p.m Friday, Aug. 28.
