CHICAGO, IL — Former San Angelo Central standout Davis Martin was ejected Thursday after the Chicago White Sox pitcher knocked the helmet off Cincinnati’s Sal Stewart with a high, inside pitch.
It was the second consecutive pitch that got away from Martin, who quickly apologized each time, though it nearly started a benches-clearing brawl.
Stewart began yelling at Davis as the benches emptied, but no punches were thrown as order was restored.
Martin stepped back onto the mound, but the umpires then met and decided to eject him.
What made matters worse is the fact that Stewart had hit a home run off Martin in his previous at-bat, so the dangerous pitches could have been viewed as intentional.
It ended Martin’s start in the third inning, continuing a rough stretch for him after a strong start to the season in which he was vying for an All-Star selection.
Martin has now allowed 23 runs over his last five starts.
Assuming he isn’t suspended, he’s lined up to face the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
