PAINT ROCK, TX — With the 2026 high school football season kicking off in just 17 days, one Concho Valley team is suddenly searching for a new head coach.
David McAbee, who led Paint Rock to a 3-7 record last year, has reportedly stepped down with the Indians in the second week of practices.
It is unknown why McAbee has left the team.
McAbee, who was previously an assistant at Paint Rock, inherited a program that was winless in 2024, and he led them to a 3-1 start last fall.
The Indians were ultimately overwhelmed by a schedule that included one of the best six-man districts in the state.
With the season set to kick off Aug. 28 at home against Concho County rival Eden, Paint Rock will have to quickly find a new coach to lead the team.
In similar situations in the past, teams have often had to turn to an assistant to take over the program.
