Romo Reportedly Had Open Bottle of Alcohol During Arrest

MILWAUKEE, WI — Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS NFL analyst Tony Romo was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence after authorities said deputies found an open container of alcohol in his vehicle during a traffic stop last week in Milwaukee.

According to three citations released by the Milwaukee County Sheriff's Office, deputies discovered an open bottle of an alcoholic beverage on the passenger side of Romo's black Jeep during an inventory before the vehicle was towed.

Authorities said Romo was stopped on Interstate 43 on July 23 after deputies observed him driving through a gore area that separates interstate traffic from vehicles entering from an on-ramp. One citation said Romo questioned what a gore area was during the stop.

Deputies said Romo performed poorly on field sobriety tests and was taken into custody, booked and later released. Court records show he was cited for refusing to take a test for intoxication after his arrest. He is scheduled to appear in court Sept. 21.

Body camera footage released earlier this week shows Romo telling deputies he was driving from a golf course and was on his way to "visit grandma and grandpa" when he was stopped. A deputy told Romo he suspected impairment because Romo had "red glassy eyes" and an "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage."

Romo, 46, attended high school in Burlington, Wisconsin, about 35 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

He has served as CBS' lead NFL game analyst since 2017 following a 13-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys from 2004 to 2016. Romo was selected to four Pro Bowls and remains the Cowboys' franchise leader with 248 career touchdown passes. He previously held the franchise record for career passing yards before Dak Prescott surpassed his total.
