Cowboys Sign Former Baylor, Second-Round Receiver to Roster

ARLINGTON, TX — The Dallas Cowboys have signed a former high draft pick and Baylor Bear to their roster.

The Cowboys are adding Denzel Mims to assist the wide receiving room. It could be a questionable signing as Dallas currently has both CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens on the team, but it does make sense from a depth perspective. Pickens is playing on the franchise tag this season and, with the exception of Ryan Flournoy, Dallas really doesn’t have much out wide.

KaVontae Turpin is currently the Cowboys' returner and “speed guy,” which is something Mims brings to the table. Flournoy, who was a 2024 sixth-round pick, fits the third receiver role, but competition is always good, especially at the bottom of the roster.

his final season at Baylor, Mims had 66 catches for 1,020 yards and 12 touchdowns, leading him to get drafted with the 59th overall pick of the 2020 NFL Draft by the New York Jets. However, his journey through the NFL has been rough. During his time with the Jets, which was three seasons, Mims only put up 676 yards and did not find the end zone once.

His final season with Gang Green ended with him requesting a trade, which he was granted to the Detroit Lions. He was waived that same season and found a home on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. But then he was waived yet again and moved down the east coast to Jacksonville in 2024.

However, Mims was released again just before the 2024 season started.

Still trying to keep his career going, Mims ended up signing with the St. Louis Battlehawks in the United Football League. In May 2025, he was released and, in early 2026, Mims was drafted by the Dallas Renegades in the UFL Draft. He snagged six catches for 55 yards while with the team.

The Cowboys have done other work this offseason to add to the receiving corp.

Lamb and Pickens, who reportedly is showing up to training camp, are the clear-cut 1-2 for Dallas this season. Turpin will handle kickoff and punt returns and will compete with fan favorite Flournoy for that third receiver spot.

That leaves probably two or three roster spots for Mims, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Jonathan Mingo, Tyler Johnson, Traeshon Holden, Jordan Hudson, Camden Brown and Jaden Smith to fight over.

Training camp for the Cowboys begins next month, and Dallas starts the NFL season against the division rival New York Giants on Sept. 13.
