WALL, TX — After an incredible level of success this past school year, Wall High School has claimed the Class 3A UIL Lone Star Cup for the second time in school history.
The award measures a school’s overall performance in academic and athletic competitions.
Wall scored a total of 102 points, which was 17 ahead of second-place finishers Holliday and Corpus Christi London.
Wall’s school year was highlighted by state titles in football and girls basketball, which each garnered 18 points.
The baseball and volleyball teams each scored 12 points by reaching the state semifinals, and the softball team added eight points by advaning to the regional final.
The boys golf team and boys track and field team also scored eight points with their runner-up finishes at state.
Wall’s boys basketball team earned six points by winning district and a playoff game.
Wall earned five points from its performance at the state tennis meet (highlighted by Amelia Taylor winning the girls singles title).
The girls cross country team earned four points from its fourth-place finish at the state meet, and the marching band scored four more by advancing to state.
The robotics team also earned a point from qualifying for the state competition, while the cheerleading team scored a point by placing in the top 20 at state.
Wall, which finished second in the standings last year behind Holliday, also won the Lone Star Cup in 2017.
Another Concho Valley school, Mason, tied for second place in the Class 2A Lone Star Cup standings with 66 points, sharing the runner-up finish with Gruver. Shiner won with 77 points.
Mason’s girls earned 12 points from their state title in golf and 14 from their runner-up showing in basketball.
Mason’s football team earned 10 points for its run to the state quarterfinals, and the tennis program also scored 10 points after claiming four golds and four silvers at the state meet.
The other points came from the boys golf team taking third at state (6), the UIL academics team winning district and taking fifth at state (6), the boys basketball team reaching the playoffs and winning a postseason game (4), and the baseball and softball teams each reaching the playoffs (2).
Christoval tied for 24th place with 37 points — highlighted by its one-act play winning the state title, which scored 12 points.
In Class 1A, area schools with top 25 finishes included Garden City (tied for seventh with 42 points), Water Valley (10th with 39 points) and Menard (13th with 37 points).
Garden City’s school year was highlighted by its boys golf team winning the state title.
Water Valley’s showing was powered by its volleyball team reaching the state final, its football team advancing to the state semifinals, and its boys basketball team’s trip to the regional final.
Menard’s marching band was the state runner-up, and it saw district titles and a playoff win from football and baseball, along with a three gold-medal performance from Danni Ruiz at the state track meet.
