MASON, TX — Mason senior-to-be Flora Appleton is a small-town girl receiving some big-time college basketball interest.
Appleton, a 6-foot-2 shooting guard, has already been offered by three NCAA Division I schools — San Jose State, Siena and Bellarmine — along with D-II Chaminade.
San Jose State is the most high-profile of the colleges as it competes in the Mountain West Conference with schools like Boise State, Colorado State, San Diego State, UNLV, New Mexico and Air Force.
Appleton was a key part of Mason’s team last season that reached its first state final in program history. The Cowgirls had a record of 40-2 and were ranked No. 2 in the state.
Appleton averaged 13.2 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game and earned Class 2A all-state honors from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches and Texas Girls Coaches Association.
She was also named the Newcomer of the Year in District 29-2A.
Appleton began her high school career at tiny 1A Richland Springs, where she was a district MVP and an all-state selection. She transferred to Mason after her sophomore year.
She surpassed the 1,000-point career mark early in her junior season.
Outside of school, Appleton plays for Phoenix Select Basketball, an AAU team based out of Austin.
Appleton will be one of the top players to watch in the Concho Valley next season. She’ll also become the team leader for Mason after the Cowgirls graduated Anna Marie Whitworth and Ainsley Burns, each of whom signed with Angelo State University. Whitworth signed for basketball, while Burns signed for golf.
