OMAHA, NE — The Lone Star State will be represented by five baseball teams in this weekend’s NCAA Division I regional tournaments — two powerhouse programs and three underdogs.
The No. 6-ranked Texas Longhorns (40-13) and No. 12 Texas A&M Aggies (39-14) are the teams you’d expect to see at this time of year.
Texas is a six-time national champion that has made 38 trips to the College World Series. A&M was the national runner-up in 2024 and has made eight World Series appearances.
Both of them will host four-team regional tournaments beginning Friday on their home field.
Texas will welcome Holy Cross, UC Santa Barbara and Tarleton State to Austin. A&M will host Lamar, Texas State and USC in College Station.
For Tarleton, Lamar and Texas State, this is their chance to make a name for themselves on the national stage.
Last year, UT San Antonio upset Texas on the way to the Super Regional round, though the Roadrunners fell one series short of making it to the College World Series.
None of those teams has advanced to the World Series before. Rice in 2003 is the only Texas team besides the Longhorns to ever win it all.
This will be Tarleton State's first-ever trip to regionals as an NCAA Division I school, and it’s the Texans’ first NCAA playoff appearance since 2018 when they were still in a conference with Angelo State.
Tarleton (37-19) has already earned a win this year over Texas and two over Baylor.
Texas State (36-24) is making its seventh trip to regionals and first since 2022. The Bobcats own wins over Texas A&M and Baylor this season, along with one against Tarleton State.
Lamar (34-25) is making its 14th appearance at regionals and its first since 2010. The Cardinals seem like the most unlikely of the Texas underdogs as they were completely overwhelmed in their matchups against A&M (25-5) and UT (14-4) this season.
That being said, they enter the playoffs on a seven-game winning streak, and anything can happen come tournament time.
The winners of the 16 regional tournaments will advance to the Super Regionals next week, where we will get our eight teams headed to Omaha, Nebraska, for the College World Series.
