SAN ANGELO, TX — Angelo State freshman sprinter William Opare was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Division II National Track Athlete of the Year on Wednesday.
Opare, who is from Ghana, claimed three national championships and helped the Rams to a seventh-place finish at the national track meet last week.
Opare claimed individual crowns in the 200- and 400-meter runs and anchored the 4x400 relay team to a national title.
In the 400, Opare ran a time of 44.95 seconds, which was the fifth-fastest time ever in Division II and the national record for Ghana.
In the 200, Opare had a time of 20.45 seconds.
The 4x400 relay team of Taylor Briggs, Jahleel Armstrong, Rami Balti and Opare won with a time of 3:04.46, which was over a second faster than the previous ASU record of 3:05.89 set back in 1997.
Opare is the first ASU track athlete to ever win National Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year honors. He also won the national indoor award earlier this year.
