TYLER, TX – The Angelo State Rams moved within one win of the Super Regionals after earning a 5-1 victory over UT Tyler on Friday at the NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament.
UT Tyler had won four of five games against ASU this season — including a two-game sweep last week at the Lone Star Conference Tournament — but the Rams won their most important meeting so far.
No. 3-seeded ASU (42-17) needs one more win to clinch its spot in the Super Regional round. No. 2 seed UT Tyler (44-11) will need to beat ASU twice, beginning at 3 p.m. Saturday.
Strong pitching performances from Clayton Broeder and Isaac Godard, paired with timely offense, powered ASU past UT Tyler on the Patriots’ home field.
ASU scored twice in the second inning and added another run in the sixth for a 3-0 lead.
UT Tyler, which was held to only three hits, pushed across its only run in the bottom of the sixth.
The Rams scored a pair of insurance runs in the eighth inning on a two-run home run by Austin Beck to help put the game away.
Broeder allowed three hits in 5.1 innings of work before Godard dominated down the stretch, recording the final 11 outs of the game with no hits and six strikeouts.
