CANYON, TX — The Angelo State University softball team defeated Texas A&M-Kingsville 6-5 on Friday in their NCAA Division II South Central Regional opener.
The Rambelles won when Ashleigh Dendas was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning.
In a back-and-forth game, Kingsville tied the game at 5-5 in the top of the seventh. But the Belles came right back and put runners on second and third base with one out in the bottom half of the inning.
Kingsville elected to intentionally walk Tatiana Trotter, but the very next pitch hit Dendas to end the game.
No. 3-seeded ASU now has to turn around and play No. 2 seed and host West Texas A&M just 30 minutes later for the right to advance to the regional final.
The Belles are in a tough scheduling spot because their game with Kingsville was postponed Thursday evening due to brush fires in the area that reduced the air quality at Schaeffer Park in Canyon.
ASU trailed on three occasions Friday against Kingsville, including 3-1 in the fourth inning and 4-3 in the fifth inning. The Belles responded each time, including on a two-run home run by Zoey Sifuentes in the fourth inning and with two runs in the fifth after a solo HR by Kylie Forney and an RBI single by Dendas.
ASU improved to 47-12, while Kingsville fell to 34-20. The Javelinas will play Colorado State-Pueblo in an elimination game Friday evening.
