SAN ANGELO, TX — The Wall and Reagan County softball teams will both play in the regional finals this week, and each will have to get through the defending state champions if they want to make it any farther.
Wall (28-5) faces a powerhouse Coahoma team (24-4) that last spring became the first softball program in Texas to win three consecutive state titles.
Wall and Coahoma will face off in Big Lake for a three-game series that begins at 6 p.m. Friday. Game 2 is at noon Saturday, followed by an if-necessary Game 3 that would take place 30 minutes later.
Wall is on an improbable playoff run that appeared to end when the Lady Hawks lost in Game 3 of the area round to Jacksboro on Monday, May 4.
Two days later, however, Wall learned its season was alive again after Jacksboro was disqualified due to using an ineligible player.
The Lady Hawks then made the most of their second chance by knocking off No. 8-ranked Canadian 4-0 on Friday.
Wall has spent much of the season ranked in the top 10, though the Lady Hawks were unranked as they began the Class 3A Division II playoffs.
Coahoma was ranked No. 2 last week when it outslugged No. 1 Holliday in a wild three-game series. Coahoma won the opener 22-18, lost the second game 16-12, then won the final game 27-11.
Wall pitcher Madee Williams will likely have to throw the best games of her life to slow down Coahoma’s explosive offense this weekend.
Williams was stellar against Canadian when she threw seven innings of five-hit ball with 12 strikeouts and two walks. She was also 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run.
Reagan County (21-6) is enjoying its best playoff run in program history after previously having never advanced past the second round.
The Lady Owls have won three playoff trophies so far in the 2A Division II bracket, and they’ve done so in dominant fashion by a combined score of 47-14.
Reagan County’s most recent win, 10-0 over Clarendon, included a standout performance by pitcher Brooklynn Reyes. The Wayland Baptist signee allowed only three hits in six innings.
Sophomore Yasmine Wells led the offense by going 3-for-4 with two triples and three RBIs.
Reagan County, which is unranked, faces a Sundown team that was No. 6 in last week's rankings with a 27-3 record and a 14-game winning streak.
The Lady Roughnecks are allowing only 1.9 runs per game, and they’re scoring 13.2 runs per contest.
Sundown has won nine straight playoff series dating back to last year’s playoff run, and Reagan County doesn’t have playoff experience at this level, though that didn’t hurt the Lady Owls last week.
Reagan County and Sundown will have a one-game playoff at 6 p.m. Thursday in Andrews.
Reagan County and Wall are both three playoff series wins away from a state championship. The winners of this weekend’s series will move on to the state semifinals next week.
