CHICAGO, IL — Former San Angelo Central star Davis Martin threw another gem on Sunday to lower his ERA to the second-best mark in all of Major League Baseball.
The Chicago White Sox pitcher’s ERA now sits at 1.62 — behind only the 1.35 ERA of New York Yankees ace Cam Schlittler — after he threw six innings of one-run ball against the Seattle Mariners.
Martin scattered just three hits on the day, but he had to settle for a no-decision after leaving while trailing 1-0, though the White Sox rallied for a 2-1 win.
Martin is near the top of the league in a handful of categories in a breakout year for the 29-year-old.
In addition to his stellar earned-run average, he’s also tied for second in wins with 5, tied for second in quality starts with 6, tied for second in WAR (wins above replacement) at 2.6, and tied for 15th in WHIP (walks plus hits per inning pitched) at 1.00.
His streak of 17 consecutive starts allowing three runs or fewer is the longest in the league.
The season is only six weeks old, but Martin is currently on pace to earn his first All-Star nod.
Martin is scheduled to make his next start at 6:10 p.m. Saturday when the White Sox host the Chicago Cubs.
Martin is one of only three San Angelo Central players to reach the majors, joining David Hulse and Trey Lunsford.
