LOS ANGELES, CA — Former San Angelo Central star Davis Martin threw the best game of his professional career Monday in a 6-0 win for the Chicago White Sox against the Los Angeles Angels.
Martin fired seven shutout innings while striking out 10 and not walking a single batter.
He scattered five hits and escaped his only jam in the seventh inning when he allowed runners on the corners with two outs.
Martin, who improved to 5-1 this season, is now tied for second in all of Major League Baseball in wins. He also has the league’s third-best ERA at 1.64 and the second best WAR (wins above replacement) at 2.2.
In 44 innings, he has compiled a stellar ratio of 43 strikeouts to only eight walks.
Monday’s 10 strikeouts set a new career-high for Martin, whose previous best was seven. It was the fourth time he has completed seven innings and the first time he has done so without allowing a run.
The 2015 Central graduate entered this year as the No. 4 starter in the White Sox rotation, but he is on pace to earn his first-ever trip to the MLB All-Star Game.
The White Sox now have a 17-18 record, which is a considerable improvement from last year’s 60-102 mark that was the second-worst record in the league.
Martin will pitch again at 1:10 p.m. Sunday when the White Sox host the Seattle Mariners.
