MIDLAND, TX — San Angelo football fans once rooted for Chris Brazzell in the NFL after he was drafted out of Angelo State. Now Brazzell’s son will also try to make West Texas proud.
Chris Brazzell II was drafted last week in the third round out of the University of Tennessee by the Carolina Panthers.
Brazzell II played his high school ball at Midland Legacy and had three touchdown catches in a 2021 game against San Angelo Central while playing on the same field as his father when he was at ASU.
The 6-foot-5 Brazzell II had 62 catches for 1,017 yards and nine TDs last fall with Tennessee.
The senior Chris Brazzell, who played at Alice High School, shined at ASU with 47 catches for 1,091 yards and 13 TDs as a senior. Teams didn’t pass as much in those days, so he was only the second Ram to have a 1,000-yard receiving season, and he led the Lone Star Conference that year with 109.1 receiving yards per game.
Brazzell was drafted in the sixth round of the 1998 Draft by the New York Jets. He later played with the Dallas Cowboys and caught his first NFL pass from Hall of Famer Troy Aikman.
Brazzell has another son, Colin, who is a cornerback at Abilene Christian University.
