SAN ANGELO, TX — After leading the Central Bobcats boys basketball team to their most successful season in 14 years, head coach Arsenio Geter was named a finalist for the Class 6A Don Coleman Outstanding Coach Award from the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
Geter was one of only four coaches in the state to receive the honor of being a finalist for the 6A award, along with San Antonio O’Connor’s Kia Griffin, Grand Oaks’ Anthony Stephens and Seven Lakes’ Shannon Heston.
Griffin was the winner of the award, given to the state’s Coach of the Year.
Geter guided Central to a 29-6 record, its first undisputed district title since 2012, and a first-round playoff win. The Bobcats were tripped up in the second round 76-65 by Crowley.
Geter was named the Coach of the Year on the All-District 2-6A Boys Basketball Team.
It was Geter’s second season as the Bobcats head coach. He previously coached the Central girls basketball team, which he led to a 23-12 record during the 2023-24 season.
Geter graduated from Muleshoe High School in 2006 and West Texas A&M in 2010 before coaching stints at McCamey, Borger, Brownfield, Brenham, Hondo and Abilene Cooper.
Other coaches from around the area who were finalists in their classification included Garden City’s Dustin Bates in 1A and Reagan County’s Damien Bates in 2A.
Both coaches were honored as finalists for the Dean Weese Outstanding Coach Award, given to the state’s girls Coach of the Year.
Dustin Bates led Garden City to a 27-7 record, a state ranking of No. 13 and a trip to the regional semifinals. Damien Bates helped Reagan County go 21-13 and win its first-round playoff game a year after a 9-22 season.
