Lake View's Jefferson Takes 3rd at State Powerlifting Meet

EDINBURG, TX — San Angelo Lake View's Janiya Jefferson took third place Friday in her weight class at the Class 4A Division I state powerlifting meet at Bert Ogden Arena in Edinburg.

Jefferson lifted 485 pounds in the squat, 260 pounds in the bench press and 435 pounds in the deadlift for a total lift of 1,180 pounds.

She was 80 pounds behind the winning total of 1,260 pounds by Big Spring's Liah Garza, and she was 40 pounds behind runner-up Sarai Harris of Paris.

It was the second consecutive year Jefferson finished in third place at the state meet, and she again posted the best deadlift of any lifter at the meet.

Her deadlift last year of 440 pounds remains the state record in 4A Division I.

Lake View had a strong showing in powerlifting this year as Bella Reyes was also third in the unequipped state meet Thursday. The unequipped division is for lifters who use the minimal supportive gear.

Lake View's other state qualifier, Avralynn Sosa, was 13th in her weight class. She had a squat of 225 pounds, a bench of 125, and a deadlift of 210 for a total lift of 560 pounds.
