TLCA’s Trevino Wins Powerlifting Title for School’s First State Championship

EDINBURG, TX — TLCA San Angelo’s Samantha Trevino took first place Thursday at the 3A Division I state powerlifting meet to bring home her school first-ever state title in athletics.

Trevino won her weight class with a squat of 365 pounds, a bench press of 225 and a deadlift of 380 for a total lift of 970 pounds.

She improved by 20 pounds on her winning total at the regional meet. Her total at state was 40 pounds ahead of the next-closest competitor.

Trevino was also awarded a college scholarship by the Texas High School Women’s Powerlifting Association.

TLCA had five lifters competing at state following the Lady Eagles’ second-place finish at the regional meet.

Abby Cook was seventh in her weight class at state (370-180-340 — 890), while Niera Lecroy was 13th (210-140-225 — 575). Genesis Gonzalez and Sarah Hernandez were both unable to complete their attempted lifts.

All of TLCA’s lifters finished in the top two at regionals to qualify for state.

Trevino’s state title earned TLCA enough points for an 11th-place finish in the team standings.
