12 Texas Teams Selected for Men’s and Women’s March Madness

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Lone Star State is sending a total of 12 teams to the NCAA Basketball Tournament — six on the men’s side and six for the women.

For the men’s March Madness bracket, Houston leads the way for Texas teams as a No. 2 seed. The Cougars (28-6) lost in the last minute of the national final last year, and they hope to again make a run at their elusive first national title.

Next up is No. 5 seed Texas Tech (22-10), which would be one of the country’s most dangerous teams if the Red Raiders were at full strength, as evidenced by wins over No. 1 seeds Duke and Arizona. After All-American J.T. Toppin’s season-ending knee injury, however, they seem unlikely to make their way to the Final Four.

The other Texas teams in the field are No. 9 TCU (22-11), No. 10 Texas A&M (21-11), No. 11 Texas (18-14) and No. 11 SMU (20-13).

On the women’s side, the University of Texas (31-3) earned a No. 1 seed. The Longhorns reached the Final Four last year and are a real threat to win it all this season.

TCU (29-5) is also a Final Four contender as a No. 3 seed. The Horned Frogs reached the Elite Eight last year.

Baylor (24-8) is a No. 6 seed and always a team you expect to see in the field. Texas Tech (25-7) is a No. 7 seed and back in the tournament for the first time in 13 years.

Stephen F. Austin (25-9) and UTSA (18-15) each snuck in as No. 16 seeds.

The men’s tournament begins with the First Four on Tuesday, which features Texas playing North Carolina State at 8:15 p.m. The women’s tournament starts on Wednesday with its First Four, which included Stephen F. Austin playing Missouri State at 8 p.m.
