GEORGETOWN, TX — The No. 2-ranked Mason Cowgirls won their 31st straight game Thursday to claim the regional title with a 42-29 win over No. 7 Flatonia.
Mason was holding on to a 24-23 lead heading into the fourth quarter before taking over down the stretch.
The Cowgirls are now headed to the state semifinals for the fourth time in program history. They went three straight years from 2018 to 2020, but they’ve never advanced to the state championship.
Mason (39-1) has been ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 2A for much of the season behind No. 1 Panhandle, which also punched its ticket to the 2A Division I state semifinals Thursday with a 41-37 win over Wellington.
However, Panhandle is on the other side of the bracket, so a potential Mason-Panhandle showdown wouldn’t happen until the state final.
Mason will await the winner of two unranked teams — Marlin (24-10) and San Augustine (26-9) — that play Friday. Panhandle will have to get past No. 2 Cisco or No. 9 Collinsville.
Flatonia was a considerable roadblock for Mason as the Lady Bulldogs had lost only three times before Thursday. Their season ended with a record of 35-4.
Mason hasn’t lost since its ninth game of the season when Ozona handed the Cowgirls a 44-38 setback on Nov. 22.
Since then, Mason has had only two games decided by less than 10 points during its incredible winning streak.
