Central’s Reel Sets School Record, Reaches Finals at State Swimming Meet

AUSTIN, TX — San Angelo Central’s Elsa Reel qualified for the finals in both of her events Friday at the UIL Swimming & Diving Class 6A State Meet, setting a new school record in the process.

Reel swam the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2 minutes, 2.3 seconds to finish third in the prelims and set the school record.

She entered the state meet with the ninth-best time in the 24-girl field, but she turned in the best time of her life by more than two seconds.

Reel was just .75 seconds behind the first-place time of Allen’s Katelynn Zhou.

Reel was also third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:02.84. She was 1.59 seconds behind the winning time of Keller’s Ella McWhorter.

Reel had the fourth-best time heading into that event.

The Central senior will now compete against seven other swimmers in the finals of each event Saturday at the Lee & Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center at the University of Texas at Austin.
