Wall, TLCA Joining Hill Country Teams Tops UIL Realignment Surprises

SAN ANGELO, TX — You can always count on surprises when the UIL releases its new district realignment every two years, and Monday was no different.

Top among the list had to be Wall and San Angelo TLCA being placed in a football district with Hill Country schools Ingram Moore and Llano, along with Early.

It seemed likely our two Tom Green County teams would end up with nearby schools to the north like Jim Ned, Sweetwater and Clyde, or perhaps they’d be sent west with schools such as Brownfield, Denver City, Kermit and Lamesa.

Instead, they were thrown a curveball and sent east and south.

Early is nearly 100 miles away from TLCA, while Llano and Ingram Moore are 130 and 140 miles away, respectively. It’s not much closer for Wall, which sits about 12 miles southeast of San Angelo.

From a competitive standpoint, Wall and Llano is quite the pairing in the new District 3-3A Division I. Wall just won the 3A Division II state title, while Llano went 13-2 last year and reached the state semifinals in 3A D-I.

Wall head coach Craig Slaughter also used to be the head coach at Llano.

Ingram Moore was in a district with Llano last year and went 7-6 with a pair of playoff wins.

Like Wall, Early is moving up from 3A D-II. The Longhorns went 5-6 last year and lost in the first round of the playoffs.

TLCA was mired in an extremely difficult district the last two school years, and this doesn’t look a whole lot better for a team coming off back-to-back winless seasons.

In basketball and volleyball, the district looks more like you’d expect for Wall and TLCA as they’ll remain with Clyde, Merkel, Grape Creek, Jim Ned and Sweetwater.
