WALL, TX — Wall High School is atop the state in Class 3A after the UIL’s first Lone Star Cup standings update.
Led by its first-ever state in football, Wall has already accumulated 40 points, giving it an eight-point lead over second-place Holliday.
The Lone Star Cup measures a school’s overall performance in academic and athletic competitions.
The Hawks’ state title in football was worth 18 points, while the Lady Hawks’ volleyball team earned 12 more points by reaching the state semifinals.
The girls cross country team earned four points from its fourth-place finish at the state meet, and the marching band scored four more by advancing to state.
The robotics team also earned a point from qualifying for the state competition, while the cheerleading team scored a point last week by placing in the top 20 at state.
Wall finished second in the Lone Star Cup race last year behind Holliday, which has won back-to-back titles.
Wall won the Lone Star Cup in 2017.
Another Tom Green County school, Water Valley, is also having an outstanding year and currently sits in second place in Class 1A.
Water Valley’s 28 points have it just behind McMullen County’s 32.
Water Valley claimed 14 points from its volleyball team advancing to the state final, and 10 more from its football team reaching the state semifinals.
The other four points came from Water Valley’s marching band qualifying for state.
Menard is tied for the fifth in the 1A standings with 18 points. The school’s marching band earned 12 points for a second-place finish at state, while its football team won the district title and a playoff game for six more points.
Other Concho Valley schools in the standings include Junction, which is tied for 21st in Class 2A with 14 points, and Veribest and Richland Springs, which are tied for 19th in Class 1A with 12 points.
