CHRISTOVAL, TX — The Christoval Cougars saw a sizeable first-half lead dwindle in the final minutes of a district matchup against Forsan on Thursday night. Forsan scored with less than five seconds to play to steal an away game from Christoval, 56-55.
Hayden Jost and Isreal Balderas each scored 12 points in the matchup, but it was not enough to beat Forsan at Christoval High School.
The Cougars built a solid lead in the first half, outscoring Forsan 19-9 in the first quarter and leading 32-20 at halftime. However, the Buffaloes proved resilient in the second half. Forsan put Christoval into foul trouble early in the 3rd quarter and forced the Cougars to run a smaller lineup than they would have liked. Added pressure in the lane and solid 3-point shooting saw the Buffaloes dissolve Christoval's advantage.
Then in the 4th quarter, Forsan took the lead. Both teams exchanged leads throughout the period, but it was Forsan who took the final lead off a free throw with under 10 seconds to play.
Christoval had a final chance to tie it, but could not move the ball far enough down the court for a good look at the basket.
The Cougars drop to 10-15 on the year and 4-2 in district. Christoval is still in the running for a solid playoff spot this season and returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 27, on the road in Ozona. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The No. 17-ranked Christoval Lady Cougars defeated Forsan 53-36 in the early game. The Lady Cougars moved to 24-5 overall with the win and 8-0 in district play.
