Angelo State Rams Fall Short at the Buzzer

SAN ANGELO, TX — The Angelo State men’s basketball team dropped its second straight game Wednesday night, falling 67-64 to Texas A&M-Kingsville at the Junell Center–Stephens Arena.

Neither team took serious control in the first half. Both the Rams and Javelinas traded baskets throughout the half, including multiple lead changes. However, TAMUK definitely had the advantage in fouls. Several Rams had to take a seat early to stay out of foul trouble. TAMUK led at the break, 32-29.

Despite trailing at halftime, the Rams stormed back, and built a lead of as many as seven points in the second half. Ultimately, it was the Javelinas final hot streak that doomed the Rams. TAMUK closed the game on a decisive run, making its final five field-goal attempts, including two 3-pointers, to secure the road victory.

Jordan Crawford had a chance to tie the game with a three at the buzzer, but was hit during the attempt. The referees decided that it was not a foul and Angelo State lost, 67-64.

Angelo State struggled offensively, shooting 39.6% from the field and 23.8% from beyond the arc.

Kailon Nicholls led the Rams with 14 points, knocking down two 3-pointers and dishing out four assists. Davon Scott added 13 points in 23 minutes off the bench, also connecting on a pair of shots from long range.

Jhordan Ryan recorded his fourth consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while playing all 40 minutes. He added two blocked shots and went 6 of 8 from the free-throw line. Jesaiah McWright finished with nine points, while Jordan Crawford chipped in eight points and nine rebounds.

Angelo State fell to 12-9 overall and 3-7 in Lone Star Conference play. The Rams will have an immediate chance at redemption when they face Texas A&M-Kingsville again Saturday afternoon in Kingsville.
