Big Wins, Losses Shake Up Girls State Basketball Rankings

SUGAR LAND, TX — Some upset wins and losses across our area last week have caused a considerable shakeup in this week’s girls state basketball rankings.

Garden City made the biggest statement with a 47-33 win on the road over then-No. 7 Irion County. The win vaulted the Lady Kats from unranked to No. 15 in the state in Class 1A, while Irion County dropped to No. 16.

It was the fourth win over a ranked team this season for Garden City (19-6 overall), which now sits alone atop the District 11-1A standings at 6-0.

Ballinger had the biggest drop in the rankings, tumbling from No. 10 in Class 2A all the way down to No. 25 after a 53-48 loss at home to Colorado City. However, Ballinger bounced back by going on the road and knocking off the district’s first-place team, Coleman, 43-32.

Ballinger lost starter Kyndal Rollwitz to a season-ending knee injury, contributing to the team hitting a 1-3 slide after an 18-1 start, but the Lady Cats (20-4 overall, 3-3 in district) are now right back in the playoff race after the win over Coleman.

Christoval (22-5 overall, 6-0 in district) extended its winning streak to 10 in a row to move up four spots to No. 17 in the 2A rankings.

Ozona (20-5, 5-1) also moved up four spots to No. 19 after its fifth straight win.

Another team climbing four spots in the rankings was Menard (16-3, 6-0), which is up to No. 21 in 1A.

The top teams in our area — Wall and Mason — held onto their spots. Wall (25-3, 6-0) is still No. 1 in 3A, while Mason (29-1, 6-0) remains No. 2 in 2A.
