FORT WORTH, TX — San Angelo Central continued its strong tradition in competitive cheerleading Saturday with a 12th-place finish at the UIL Spirit State Championships at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
Central was one of 20 schools in the state in Class 6A Division I — the largest classification in Texas — to advance through qualifying to the finals, where it scored 88.63 points.
Katy Taylor scored 92.9 points to win its first-ever state title at the event.
Central’s cheerleading program has had considerable success in recent years at state competitions, including a runner-up finish in 2020. The program is a four-time UIL fight song state champ, and they’ve won six national titles with the National Cheerleaders Association.
Central also advanced to the finals last year and came away with a 17th-place finish.
Central’s 12th-place finish Saturday capped a strong showing for Concho Valley schools that was highlighted by Sonora taking third and Ballinger finishing sixth in Class 2A Division I.
Other area schools that reached the finals included Wall, which was 16th in Class 3A Division II, and Christoval, which was 17th in 2A Division I. Farther out in the region, Jim Ned won its first state title in 3A Division I.
