SAN ANGELO, TX — A solid scoring night from the Rambelles saw Angelo State (6-9)(4-5) take down UT Dallas (6-8)(3-4) in the two teams' first-ever matchup at Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Thursday night, 63-49.
Angelo State led from start to finish, shooting 36.1% from the field and 36.4% from 3-point range while outrebounding the Comets 48-38. The Rambelles forced 16 turnovers and turned them into 18 points.
An explosive first quarter gave the Rambelles a 12-point lead heading into the 2nd, before UT Dallas cut the deficit to 34-29 just before the half. UT Dallas cut further into the Rambelles' lead in the 3rd, trailing by just two points as the two teams entered the final frame. In the 4th, a balanced scoring effort allowed Angelo State to pull away in the final minutes to claim victory, 63-49.
Taylor Grona led the Rambelles with 16 points, hitting 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. She added eight rebounds, a team-high four assists and two steals. Majik Esquivel followed with 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, two assists, and a block. Keniah Williams came off the bench for 11 points, three rebounds and two blocks. Landry Morrow added 10 points, a team-high eight rebounds, and three steals. Tristin Keller, Stevi Lockheart, Briley Merket and Kenna Wood also contributed offensively for the Rambelles.
Angelo State returns to action Wednesday, Jan. 21. The Rambelles host Texas A&M–Kingsville at the Junell Center–Stephens Arena. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m.
