GARLAND, TX — The Water Valley volleyball team fell one win short of its third state championship with a 25-18, 25-20, 25-9 loss to Blum on Thursday in the Class 1A state final at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland.
Water Valley was the runner-up from its district but pulled off an exciting playoff run, including wins over district rival Veribest in the regional final and No. 5-ranked Saint Jo in the state semifinals.
The Lady Cats were playing in the state final for the first time since 2018. They had hoped to join the program’s other state-title teams from 1986 and 2011.
Blum won its third state crown in the last four years, and the Lady Bobcats did it without dropping a single set during their playoff run.
Blum’s Kinsley McPherson was named the MVP of the state final. She was also the MVP in 2023 when Blum won the second of back-to-back titles.
Blum finished its season with a record of 30-19.
Water Valley, which began the year 4-7, found its stride as the season went on and closed the year at 26-15.
