FORSAN, TX — Christian Villarreal had another incredible rushing performance Friday night, and the No. 6-ranked Ozona Lions needed every bit of it.
Villarreal had 35 carries for 411 yards and five touchdowns as Ozona held off Forsan 46-40 to clinch its first district title since 2016. He also had two catches for 53 yards.
The game was the closest Ozona has played this year. A 14-point win over Brady in Week 3 was the only other time the Lions didn’t win by at least 40 points.
While Ozona improved to 9-0 overall and 4-0 in District 3-2A Division I, Villarreal continued chasing the state’s single-season rushing record.
He now has 3,269 rushing yards and 47 TDs, putting him within 776 yards of Kenneth Hall’s mark he set for Sugar Land in 1953, when he rushed for 4,045 yards in 12 games.
Villarreal is averaging 363 yards per game, which puts him on pace to break the record in the second round of the playoffs.
Friday’s performance was the third time this season that Villarreal has surpassed the 400-yard mark. His lowest output was a 230-yard effort against Brady.
Ozona will look to finish off its first perfect regular season since 2002 when the Lions host Christoval next week.
Forsan fell to 3-6 overall and 2-2 in district. The Buffaloes stayed within striking distance of Ozona all night and only trailed 38-33 heading into the fourth quarter.
