ROUND ROCK, TX — The Wall Lady Hawks ran to a fourth-place finish Friday morning in the 3A division at the UIL Cross Country State Championships at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
The Lady Hawks improved on last year’s sixth-place showing at state, totaling 140 points, which was only 13 points behind third-place Eustace.
East Bernard was the team champ with 94 points, followed by Holliday with 114.
Holliday’s Kenli Atwood was the individual champ in a time of 11 minutes, 18 seconds on the two-mile course, which was 17 seconds ahead of runner-up Brynleigh McFarlin from Keene.
Atwood was the state runner-up last year. The senior is the daughter of Kyle Atwood, a former track state champion at Muleshow who was previously the head track coach at San Angelo Central and the head football coach at Grape Creek.
Wall was led by Mckenzie Lopez, who finished in 17th place in 12:17. Other Lady Hawks’ finishers included Emma Reel in 45th, Allison Baird in 47th, Amelia Taylor in 61st, Dailyn Beam in 75th, Heaven Jackson in 104th and Kylee Holik in 129th.
The field included 16 teams and 151 runners from around the state.
In the 3A boys race, Lytle won the team title with 68 points, followed by San Antonio Cole with 104 and Holliday with 108.
Holliday again had the individual champ as Noah Strohman finished the 5,000-meter course in 15:26. He was 18 seconds ahead of teammate Ryder Strohman, who was the runner-up.
The 5A and 1A races will be held later this morning. On Saturday, the 2A, 4A and 6A races will be held.
