SAN ANGELO, TX — After an early look at enrollment numbers from UIL’s Snapshot Day, it appears a couple Concho Valley schools could be dropping to a lower classification next year.
Brady and Sterling City both turned in numbers that project them to move down for the 2026-28 realignment.
Brady’s enrollment number Friday was 232, a significant drop from 292 two years ago.
Brady is currently in Class 3A Division II, which had an enrollment range of 254 to 368 during the last realignment.
Brady’s declining enrollment hasn’t affected the Bulldogs too much on the football field, where they’re off to a 6-2 start and in first place in their district.
Sterling City, which has spent the last four seasons in Class 2A Division II, could be moving back down to six-man, where the Eagles won a state title in 2020.
Sterling City turned in an enrollment number of 101 on Friday, and the last range for 1A Division I was 61.5 to 104.9.
Sterling City was at 136 during the last realignment.
Declining enrollment is a common theme among small towns around the Concho Valley. Only a handful of towns in our area saw their enrollments go up.
Wall’s enrollment climbed from 343 to 370, which puts the school on the bubble to move up to 3A Division I. The classification began at 369 last time around but, assuming it moves up even a little, Wall will remain one of the bigger 3A D-II schools in the state.
Christoval’s number also crept up from 195 to 204. The school could potentially drop from 2A Division I if the cutoff climbs high enough, but it was 181.5 two years ago, so a drop seems unlikely.
Other schools more in danger of dropping to 2A Division II are Mason (193) and San Saba (197).
The school with the biggest enrollment gain in the area was again San Angelo TLCA, which moved from 406 to 458. TLCA is the third-biggest school in the Concho Valley and in Class 3A Division I. A move to 4A Division II won’t be happening as the cutoff last time was 545.
School districts have until Nov. 7 to finalize their enrollment numbers and submit them to the UIL, which will then determine the new numbers for each classification. The new classifications are set to be released in late November.
